چکیده

In this paper we present a study on visual perception, awareness and self-control, based on the visual exploration of the classical Brentano-Müller Lyer illusion and of some of its variants. The study has been realized with the help of self-made software designed to analyze eye-tracker recordings. In the case of subjects that have a certain familiarity with visual illusions, although not with all its variants, it is possible to observe, after some hundreds of milliseconds, the occurrence of a transition toward an aware exploration of the images. Moreover, it has been possible to show that the awareness might or might not help it depends on the subject to get out from the "trap" of the illusion. Author

Processing of the Müller-Lyer illusion by a Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus).

Alex, a Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus) who identifies the bigger or smaller of two objects by reporting its color or matter using a vocal English label and who states "none" if they do not differ in size, was presented with two-dimensional Müller-Lyer figures (Brentano form) in which the central lines were of contrasting colors. His responses to "What color bigger/ smaller?" demonstrated tha...

Personality Traits and Perception of Müller-Lyer Illusion in Male Chinese Military Soldiers and University Students

BACKGROUND In military men, performance such as gun-shooting precision relies on factors such as the ability to resist visual illusion, and this misperception of visual stimulus might be linked with sensation seeking related personality. METHODS We have invited 103 male military men and 104 age-matched university male students to undergo the experiment of the Brentano version of the Müller-Ly...

The Müller-Lyer illusion affects visuomotor updating in the dorsal visual stream.

To guide our actions, the brain has developed mechanisms to code target locations in egocentric coordinates (i.e., with respect to the observer), and to update these when the observer moves. The latter mechanism, called visuomotor updating, is implemented in the dorsal visual stream of the brain. In contrast, the ventral visual stream is assumed to transform target locations into an allocentric...

When is grasping affected by the Müller-Lyer illusion? A quantitative review.

Milner and Goodale (1995) [Milner, A. D., & Goodale, M. A. (1995). The visual brain in action. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press] proposed a functional division of labor between vision-for-perception and vision-for-action. Their proposal is supported by neuropsychological, brain-imaging, and psychophysical evidence. However, it has remained controversial in the prediction that actions are not...

The haptic Müller-Lyer illusion in sighted and blind people.

We examined the effect of visual experience on the haptic Müller-Lyer illusion. Subjects made size estimates of raised lines by using a sliding haptic ruler. Independent groups of blind-folded-sighted, late-blind, congenitally blind, and low-vision subjects judged the sizes of wings-in and wings-out stimuli, plain lines, and lines with short vertical ends. An illusion was found, since the wings...
